That awkward moment when you title a post "that awkward moment when..."

I generally am not a very awkward person. I can usually say what I mean and if something embarrassing does happen, I laugh it off as good story for later (oh boy, do I have a doozy for you later). There is one time when I just exude awkwardness. Its at any door on campus. (long explanation first, funny story second)

Getting into a building is like an intricate dance for me. Should I speed up because this person is going to hold the door? Should I slow down, let this person get in the door and then hit the button? Ok slow down. Oh shoot. They're holding it open but I already hit the button. "Oh, yeah, uh, thanks! Have a good day!" And then I usually shake my head at just how awkward I was.

I've discovered that it's usually safest to underestimate people's kindness and then be surprised when they are nice. It usually works well for me. But one day, I forgot my door opening manifesto.

For those of you who are unfamiliar with the BYU library (I should probably be a little more familiar with it...), there are two sets of double doors at the entrance. When I hit the door opener button (there has to be a more eloquent way of saying that...) both sets of doors open at the same time. That's four doors. It's like the parting of the Red Sea, which is a little excessive for me but it gets the job done.

One day, I was heading up to the library and walking behind an older gent. I'm assuming he was a professor. I was pretty close behind him so I assumed he'd hold the door for me. Wrong. The door closed in my face so I backed up and hit the access button (ah, that's better). Just as I hit the button, the door slamming chap got up to the second set of doors, which opened automatically as he was reaching for the handle.

And the doors smacked him in the face.

I felt bad. I really did. It was most likely an honest mistake on both ends. But like all embarrassing stories, it makes for a good one later.

Sometimes, it's OK to...

-Tell every single person you see how excited you are for Thanksgiving and Christmas (They most likely agree. If they don't, run)
-Eat a burnt bagel for breakfast. And then burnt pizza for lunch (I'll let you know how Saturday goes).
-Stay in on a Saturday night and watch Little Manhattan and Hunger Games.
-Google "sometimes, it's OK..." to get some ideas for a blog post you're writing.
-To not like any of the results you got.
-Still be happy anyways because that was two (now three) ideas!
-Also question whoever said Sometimes it's OK to not keep your eyes on the road (who are you?!)
-Not take outfit pictures.
-To spend way too much time on Pinterest (I'm going to keep telling myself that)
-Be really attracted to Capt. Hook on Once Upon a Time.
-Be really glad the elections will be over in just a few days.
-To watch this video a million times

Oh yeah, Halloween.

Most college girls on Halloween:

Me:
I was a lumberjack. I had a beard. And an ax. And an attitude to match (not really).

We ate chili, watched Red Eye, hardly ate any candy (weird...), much fun was had.

Long time no....whatever.

Source: tumblr.com via Shelby on Pinterest

This picture is in no way related to this post. I just really like it. Yay for cute kids.

You know that awkward moment when you see a friend who just got back from some amazing vacation or just got engaged or something like that? And they say to you "Tell me about your life! What have you been up to?" And you just sit there...thinking...steam starts coming out your ears and you realize you haven't done anything exciting in the week or month or year since you've seen them last. And then you want to just to crawl into bed and cry?

Oh, you don't ever have that experience? Then what are you doing reading this blog? Go carry on with your crazy, exciting life and leave the rest of us to watch Say Yes to the Dress and eat an entire bag of Goldfish (slight exaggeration.)

Ok, so I have done more than just eat and watch TLC since I wrote last. I went home over the summer and got to hang out with my family and fwiends. I then came back to BYU to start my junior year of college. Yeah, junior year. That means I'm like, almost graduated. Weird.

I've got some wicked awesome content coming your way so stick around. Please?

Tied T-Shirt aka A Jersey Outie

Dress//Target. T-shirt//stolen from my brother (Target).

This was the most comfortable outfit. Ever. No one can tell me differently. Jersey dress and a t-shirt. Can life get any better? No, I say.

Also, I'm still working on the whole t-shirt knotting thing. I love it but I also felt like I had a giant t-shirt outie. I think a few degree shift would make it all ok. Here's to summer and lots more t-shirt experimenting.

3 no-sew ways to upcycle a long sleeve t-shirt

There's a lot more where this came from if you follow the link below.

Here is an article/slideshow I put together for The Universe, BYU's student run newspaper. The title says it all, really. Thank you to the DI for providing a shirt. We arrived 5 minutes before closing and boy, you didn't disappoint! And Makayla, for being my illustrious model.

This one time, at bunco night...

We moved into a new house about 6 years ago. Within a few hours, we had met all of our neighbors. We were so excited considering that we had lived in our previous house for 7 years and the only interaction we had had with our neighbors was over the fence and went a little something like this.

"Hey, can you throw our ball back over?"

My mom was even more excited when one of the neighbors told her that all the ladies got together to play Bunco once a month.

"Golly gee, I sure do love a good, wholesome game of Bunco!" (that was foreshadowing. and my mom doesn't really talk like that. we're mormon but not that mormon.)

She went to a few and had a swell time (maybe we really do talk like that...). When February rolled around, she got an invitation for that month's "sexy" Bunco night.

It's a bunch of married, middle-aged women. What's the worst that can happen, right?
Every one was having a good time, playing Bunco and just hanging out. The party was getting a little loud (alcohol will do that to ya) and all the people sipping their Diet Cokes were already starting to get a little uncomfortable. Suddenly, there was a knock at the door. Someone opened the door to find a young police officer standing on the steps.

"We weren't being that loud were we?" mom thought.

And then she saw the boombox.

That's right. There was a stripper coming into the house. A STRIPPER. Like, with an oily chest and nasty slicked back hair. The women with martinis in their hands had a Desperate Housewives WOOOO-then-fall-over-from-drunked-laughing moment while the women with Diet Cokes in their hands nervously laughed and took cover in the walk-in pantry (you can't make this stuff up.)

"Ok, I have to get out of here. He's in the kitchen. My coat's in the living room. I can do this. Oh my gosh, when did he come into the living room?!"

Needless to say, after an elaborate game of Dodge-The-Stripper, she got her coat and got out of there. She wasn't planning on telling me this story but I'm glad she did.

Oh and in case you were wondering, there hasn't been a Bunco night since. Or at least they haven't invited my mom.

Luxuriating

A while ago, I was bored. Really bored. The kind of bored where one second you're channel flipping and the next second you've watched an entire marathon of Toddlers and Tiaras and you have to get up, go look in the mirror and ask yourself, "WHO ARE YOU?!" Whoever says that hasn't happened to them is living in a state of delusion.

Or is just incredibly productive and I should strive to be like him or her.

She just realized she wasted 4 hours of her life that she will never get back too.
Anyways, during one of these unfortunate binges, there was a mom who said her daughter luxuriated across the stage. Luxuriated. Luxuriated? That can't be a word. I couldn't help but laugh every time she said it. Say it out loud, you'll laugh too. "Man, that mom, making up ridiculous words," I thought.

And then it happened. A few weeks ago, I read the word luxuriating in a news article. Granted, it was talking about cheetahs sunning themselves and not little girls walking down a stage a stage so luxuriously that they luxuriated but still. There it was. In print. In a reputable news source.

Did this ghetto fabulous woman who also said "ain't" and "I seen it" really have a better vocabulary then me?

I looked up the word and found this definition.

1. To take luxurious pleasure; indulge oneself.
2. To proliferate.
3. To grow profusely; thrive.

Does it fit with the context that Ms. Momma used it in? Not entirely. It's a stretch, maybe.

But as for me and my fragile self-esteem, we are going to say she "made it up". And now I know a new word! (Please tell me you haven't heard it either).

I love myself and I hate myself.

Skirt//Forever 21. Shirt//Target. Cardigan//Target. Belt//Forever 21. Shoes//Target. Earrings//Forever 21

This is me. Buying another tiered skirt hanger. I love myself and I hate myself.
I have made it throw my first 2 weeks of spring semester. I have written 2 article for The Universe. See here and here. I have a few more good ones up my sleeves but if you have any ideas of articles you'd like to read our events going on around the Provo area, let me know!

Now, go up a picture and look at where I got everything I was wearing in that outfit. Forever 21 and Target. All of it. I have a problem. I mean, that's probably better then Neiman Marcus and J. Crew right?

My cable television debut

Several weeks ago, a reporter for BYUTV posted on her Facebook page that she was looking for people do a news story on. My (favorite) religion teacher commented saying she should do a story on me. One thing led to another and next thing I knew, I was laying in a hospital bed (that's a story for another time) watching myself on TV. Weird. But here is the story. I really liked it, even if I did take a vow of silence after I watched it (do I REALLY sound like that?!) Enjoy!

(Great screenshot of me there)

Spring has sprung (And other spring related cliches)

Dress//Target. Sweater//Nordstrom. Blouse//Plato's Closet. Shoes//?. Tights//?

Guys. I'm alive. I've done it. I've made it through possibly one of the hardest school years of my life. Everyone has had those weeks, where everything seems to be going wrong. And just when you think everything is right, someone steals your credit card number. Yep. It was one of those weeks. For the entire year. Luckily, I have survived and nothing went so horribly wrong that it couldn't be fixed.

Now I am doing spring classes. A big part of me wishes I was home, going to Seattle, eating sushi and other forms of seafood a couple times a week, going to movies, reading all the books I have wanted to read for the past year and just generally enjoying all my Washington peeps. But I know that this semester will be good for me. I'm not taking a lot of classes and in fact...

I am the newest Life etc reporter for our school's newspaper, The Universe. I'll be writing about arts, entertainment, food, fashion, you name it. All my favorite things and I can't be more excited. So, I didn't get any BYU scholarships for the fall but who cares! I am going to be the best Arts & Entertainment reporter this town has ever seen. As soon as I get my story...

Here goes nothing.

Over and Out.

Current State of the Union

This is me right now. but that middle one has been the past week or so. So please, bear with me (see what I just did there? did ya?) I shall be back blogging in a week or so. And it's gonna be awesome.

JCP

Guys, JCPenny's is KILLING it right now. All their commercials are great! (minus the screaming one...) While the Ellen ones are totally hilarious, I'm loving their "month" commercials. From the music to the styling, it's a whole lotta goodness.

My Kind of Love Song

On Friday, I went and saw fun. at In The Venue in Salt Lake. Fun. was great but I have to say, I would have been content if the opening band, Avalanche City, had played the entire time. This video seriously doesn't do them justice. They were amazing. Even though they were total hipsters, they looked like they were actually *gasp* enjoying themselves! If you get a chance, seriously, go see them.

What I Wore: MoMo edition

Dress: H&M//TShirt; Target// Scarf: Thrifted// Sandals: Aldo

DISCLAIMER: This is a really old post that never got published. The weather is becoming a wee bit more spring like so I figured this would be an appropriate time to share. And I'm currently really missing that yard!

So this is my own sort of "Rule Breaking Monday (err..Tuesday)" post. I'm not big on t-shirts under sundresses. I could tell you lots of stories of bad dress:t-shirt combinations but I'm sure you've seen 'em. So I just try to steer away from them at all costs.

Except with this dress. I love this dress. It's cool and light and the color is just yummy. Not to mention, I wore it to my third and final (thus far) Jonas Brothers concert. It has a special place in my heart (EDIT: did you hear? they are going to be recording again soon!). Really, the only way to modestify this bad boy is wear a t-shirt under it so I didn't wear it a lot (see above). But it hit me one day, it doesn't have to be just a plain white t-shirt under it! I could do cool colors, patterns, whatever the heck I wanted. Et voila! This outfit (EDIT: and many more!) was born.

Current State of the Union

Elizabeth Messina for Ruche

In the Clique series, at the end of each day, Massie Block would write her "Current State of the Union" so I thought I would follow suit and do at least a weekly rundown of what's happenin'.

And I don't know about what Massie does in the Clique series because I read them all. And I especially didn't read the last one while driving to Utah for my sophomore year of college. Preposterous.

Feeling: Crafty. All I want to do is make pretty things and look at pretty things. I unfortunately have neither time nor space nor money for crafty supplies. I have been working in my Smash book though! Here's to pseudo scrapbooking!

Watching: PRETTY LITTLE LIARS! Tonight, we finally find out who "A" is. Thank. Goodness.

Reading: Uh....textbooks. I need to start a good book. I've got a wishlist on Amazon going though so hopefully I can do some reading in a couple weeks once school winds down a little.

Listening to: Ben l'Oncle. Yay frenchies!

Drinking: Peach tea. Oh man. Alison like drinking this and I had had a sip here and there and thought it was good but yesterday I actually had my own. It was fantastic (and a great excuse to use my teacup!)

Eating: Corned beef and cabbage. MMMMM.

Craving: Indian food. Hopefully going this week!

Weather: It snowed this morning and then got super nice and sunny. It's still a little chilly but sunny.

School: Just getting over the hump. 2 more weeks and it'll all be down hill from there!

Something fun I did last week: Saturday night, I stayed home by myself, watched Harry Potter and doodled. It was marvelous. Wow, I sound pathetic. But believe me, it was great.

Looking forward to: Hunger Games! I am going on Thursday with my aunt and I CANNOT wait. I'm not only excited to see the movie but to also hang out with her!

So there it is friends. As time goes on, I'll probably add to the list but here's a pretty good summary of what's up.

EDIT: I already forgot the whole Over and Out thing! So, uh...

Over and Out.

Identity Crisis

(I googled identity crisis and this popped up. I just like her hair.)

I'm going through a blogging identity crisis my friends. I don't really know what I want me little buddy here to be. Is it a fashion blog? Is it a lifestyle blog? Is it an essay blog? IS IT EVEN A BLOG?! (That's what an identity crisis will do to a girl. I took a few deep breathes and I'm ok now.)

So, as I am not one to present a problem without a solution, here is what I'm going to do about it.

  1. Read more.
  2. Post more.
  3. Write more (on the blog and on, oh what's that thing called...oh yeah, paper)
  4. Take more pictures.
  5. Actually do some of things I see on Pinterest.
  6. Do something creative at least once a week. (see above)
  7. Dance.
I'm telling you all this because I'm going to need your help in this difficult journey to self-discovery (again, this is what an identity crisis will do to a girl. why so dramatic?) So starting with number one, what are some of your favorite non-fashion, non-lifestyle blogs? Who are the best, but still fun, writers out there on the interwebs?

Comment and your name will be put in a drawing. My sponsor, Shelby's Hand, will be giving away a high-five to a commenter drawn at random.

Over and Out.

     8. End all my posts with Over and Out.

If you are interested in stalking me, this is where I will be tonight! Even if you don't have a blog but live in Provo and like to do fun things, you should come! Get more info {here}. I've never been to a meet-up before and I can't wait to meet everyone!

Now if you'll excuse me, I'm going to go stare at my closet for the next oh, 8 hours or so. So. Much. Pressure!

Denim Shirt//TJMaxx. Shirt//Vintage (Mom's!). Skirt//Thrifted. Tights//?. Leg Warmers//?. Boots//Forever 21. Lipstick//MAC Russian Red.

Guys. T-Shirts and skirts are like the greatest things ever. It's just as comfy as wearing a t-shirt and jeans but better. I'm a firm believer.

This same day, my eyes were super irritated and red. I'm not totally sure why but they were. I knew I would have to wear glasses so I figured I might as well roll with it, you know.

I found this t-shirt in a bag of my mom's old clothes. It says "The Best Girls Are From Hood River, Oregon". She lived there for a while and I think my mom is pretty cool so I guess it's true. And you know, the second best girls come from Marysville, Washington. Oh who am I kidding.

Valentines.

Dress//Thrifted. Sweater//Forever 21. Tights//?. Shoes//Payless. Ring//Forever 21.

I finally had a Valentine this year. It was this dress. I got it several months ago at the DI (Can I get a "Raise The Roof" for the kid's section?). I knew V-Day would be the perfect time to debut it. Overall, the day was fun but rather uneventful. But who cares when you've got a big ruffly, polka-dotted collar around your neck?

Obsession.

Last January, I was talking with my mom.
"Oh my gosh, have you heard of Downton Abbey?!"
"No. I live in the dorms. If the Australia all the sudden disappeared I wouldn't find out until 3 days later. I know nothing of the world."
"Ok, well you should try to find it on Hulu."

And then I promptly forgot. When I got home, she said we needed to watch it. We sat down one Sunday afternoon to watch the first episode (Costco had it on DVD for $15. Holla!).

First episode ends: "Oh. My. Gosh"

3 am, last episode ends: "When does the new season start?! JANUARY?! BBC! WHAT ARE YOU DOING TO ME?!?!?!"

So this year, of course I had to catch my roommates up on it (to not only enlighten them but to also save myself from questions. And who doesn't want to watch it again? It was a win-win-win) We bought the first season and watched it over a few Sundays (we had a little more self control). Now we are all addicted.

We watch each new episode. We yell at the screen. We cry. We tell boys they can't come over during it. And when it's over, I am exhausted.

We look forward to it every week. I have been known to have a countdown once it hits about 1 on Sunday afternoon.

And if the drama wasn't enough, those dresses? The decor? The attractive men? Yes.

Love.

On a semi-related note, guess who just found out BYU has a History of fashion course?
This girl. Fall 2012, I'm coming for you.

EDIT: Have you guys seen the SNL sketch? I can't post it here but if you watch the Channing Tatum episode, you'll see it.
